How to Give a Fantastic Wedding Speech or Wedding Toast
A wedding is, hopefully, an once-in-a-lifetime event for the couple. As such, your wedding speech or toast as best man must reflect the love, the hope and the joy that the couple enjoys on their special day. After all, your job as best man is to contribute to the gaiety of the celebration, definitely not to ruin the festivities with a few tacky, tawdry and tense words!
With that being said here are tips to deliver a fantastic wedding speech that will make you the most popular best man among your circle of friends.
Of course, spontaneity is appreciated in wedding speeches. After all, it is your buddy's / brother's / cousin's wedding, which certainly is neither an orator's debate nor a privilege speech. It does not necessarily mean, however, that you can just wing it as you go. The best thing to do is still to write down your thoughts about the couple, add and delete thoughts as you edit, and practice until you nail it down. Therefore remember, 'Write it Down and Nail it Down!'
And speaking of views expressed in your wedding speech or wedding toast, keep these thoughts in mind:
1. Do incorporate an anecdote, either funny or sentimental or both, about the couple. Just remember to err on the side of caution since you want to make the couple and the guests smile. Thus, stay away from sensitive family issues (ask the family members), the bride's and groom's past relationships (a no-no) and sex jokes (only let it all out in the stag party).
2. Do keep it simple, short and sweet. You might be toasting to the happiness of the bride and groom, and they appreciate it, but the star of the show is, well, them. Think of yourself as an extra. An important extra but an extra nonetheless.
3. Do congratulate them on their wedding and thank them for bestowing on you the honor of becoming their best man.
When you are satisfied with the general outline of your wedding speech or wedding toast, you must practice in front of the mirror until you have it down pat to your satisfaction. Don't worry if you keep forgetting lines during practice since the couple and their guests don't expect anybody to be an eloquent speaker during weddings.
So, when the time comes for you to make your best man's speech, don't dilly-dally. Just do what you have to do and just say what you have to say. In short, just get over it and 'Just Do It and Just Say It!' Nonetheless, these simple tips on public speaking can help you relax and have fun during your short wedding speech or wedding toast:
1. Take a deep breath, take a few moments to remember your speech's general outline, smile at the couple and at the wedding guests and take the microphone. It's easy once you get started.
2. Take your time in saying your thoughts. You will be better understood and you can appear more relaxed when you speak in your normal speaking pace - not too slow and not too fast.
3. Take the time to let others react with your wedding speech or wedding toast. The hallmark of a good speech is when the audience shows positive reaction - laughs, smiles, and nods - to your tale, toasts and thanks.
You will soon discover that delivering a fantastic wedding speech or toast is almost as easy as everyday conversation with your friends. So, just speak your mind, be nice and everything will be just fine!
